The lesson: The pro’s and con’s of globalization

After Rachel was eliminated from the micro-financing task, and
after Linda was automatically sent to the finals, today’s contest
was solely a direct match between Joyce and Xiao Mei (the other
Joyce)
We started with a lesson on the definition of Globalization:
Globalization describes a process by which regional economies,
societies, and cultures have become integrated through a global
network of communication, transportation, and trade. The term is
sometimes used to refer specifically to economic globalization: the
integration of national economies into the international economy
through trade, foreign direct investment, capital flows, migration,
and the spread of technology. However, globalization is usually
recognized as being driven by a combination of economic,
technological, sociocultural, political, and biological factors.
The term can also refer to the transnational circulation of ideas,
languages, or popular culture through acculturation.
We then talked about some of the changes that have happened in
Canada, the US and Mexico due to
NAFTA (the
North American Free Trade Agreement) and discussed what some of the
pro’s and con’s are of Globalization are. This brought us to our
task. Handout here.
The Task: Debating the Pro’s and Con’s of globalization.
Debating on the side of globalization:
Xiao
Mei
Debating against globalization:
Joyce
Hu
Both Xiao Mei and Joyce had 1 hour to prepare 3 arguments each. The
debate was structured like this.
1 – Xiao Mei makes argument
2 – Joyce has a turn to rebuttal
3 – Xiao Mei gets 30 seconds to defend her position
After Xiao Mei’s first argument is done, then Joyce gives her
first, and the process repeats until all 6 arguments are
discussed.
Judging Panel:
Linda
Shan: Lawyer, & 2010 Jiahua Business Contest
Finalist
Eric Cheng: Jiahua Financial Director
Eric
Velouria: Jiahua General Manager
The arguments were made as laid-out here in the chart here.

The Results:
Both Xiao Mei and Joyce did an excellent job of arguing their
points. For the first 2 arguments, increasing unemployment and
increasing competitiveness, I found Xia Mei to be the clear winner.
She argued her point clearly, and gave an excellent rebuttal to
Joyce's unemployment argument. More competition always means more
benefits for end users, and globalization clearly increased world
employment. Joyce's argument here would work if she mentioned "1st
world only" but for every job lost in the West, 2 are gained in the
East. At this point Joyce knew she was down, and won the next two
arguments. However, Xiao Mei did do a good job in rebutting
argument 3 - she mentioned how many global organizations have come
into place to try to regulate or monitor habitat destruction
(although she did not give any specific names of organizations)
The argument about increased education was clearly won by Xiao Mei,
and the argument for risk of greater chances of global financial
depression were clearly won by Joyce. At this point, Eric, Linda
and I then asked Joyce and Xiao Mei to leave the room, so we can
discuss who we shall choose as the winner.
Eric Cheng voted in favor of Xiao Mei. Globalization is inevitable,
and he said that Xiao Mei did a good job of "defending the
obvious". She was well prepared and confident in her speech.
Linda voted in favor of Joyce. She said that she fought more
aggressively, spoke more clearly and defended herself quite
well.
I, Eric V, chose Xiao Mei. I felt both did very well, but that
Joyce at times got a bit lost on her direction, where as Xiao Mei
never was. Even though I believe they both won 3 arguments each,
Xiao Mei's wins were less disputable.
Joyce, you did a wonderful job, and we congratulate you on your
hard work!!
The finals will be
Linda Shan vs.
Xiao Mei
