There is a huge social division amongs the population in Shenzhen. It’s possible to see a wealthy business man in his new Porsche and a man in tattered rags selling sweet potatoes heated over a metal drum without moving your head.

But what do the social  classes have in common? Happiness. Even the lowest of wage earners are still able to come home after a hard days work and have a few beers with friends and play cards and be happy.

So when passing a guy under a bridge selling an assorment of foods in the freezing cold you would natrually want to feel pity for him, but the expression on his face cannot bring about this emotion. He is smiling.

The Dumpling Guy under the bridge keeps strange hours. He is usually around from about 7pm till 10pm. His food is served off a pedal cart, convenient for travelling to and from his place of business, below one of the busiest streets in Shenzhen, Bin He Road.

His selection is varied but I have tried pretty much eveything he has on offer an most things are really pretty awful. So what makes this guy special?

His sauce. The sauce this guy puts on the dumplings he serves is amazing. It’s his own concotion and cannot be found anywhere else. It goes so well with the dumplings he serves that even having already eaten, I often just buy some anyways just so that I can get another taste of that nectar of the oriental gods, and at 3RMB for about 8 dumplings, the dent in pocket is not felt. Sometimes if I time it right he simply gives me all the dumplings he has left so that he can leave work “early”.
