My love for a good Roujiamo might be called, by some, irrational.  I have a near religious devotion to the sandwich – a concoction so… uniquely Chinese yet so strangely familiar.  Upon bringing someone to China, usually my first deed is to swing them past street food alley in Shuiwei, introducing them to this brilliant braised pork sandwich.

Those who have lived in China for some time most likely know already – called by many “the Chinese hamburger”, I am not the only foreigner with a deep, dogmatic love for the Roujiamo.  It is made from braised pork belly, chopped together with cilantro, cucumbers, and pepper into a wonderful slop and slid into an English muffin-esque flatbread called Mo.  Upon leaving China, it is the one thing I miss the most.

Roujiamo is ubiquitous among street food stands across the city.  Some Roujiamo is good, some are terrible.  It would be insanity to declare this little Roujiamo vendor the best in the city, as only god knows what deliciousness the unexplored underbelly of this city is hiding.  Yet a couple of my Chinese friends insist that this stand in Shuiwei is the best Roujiamo they’ve had in Shenzhen, and it is, at the very least, excellent.

If you’re thinking about going there, note that the vendor usually makes enough money on his set hours of Friday, Saturday and Sunday that he will take off at least some of the days between Monday and Thursday.

The Roujiamo are RMB6 at this particular place.
